An AI Overview is assembled by retrieval from Google's ordinary index: there is no separate submission process and no separate crawler. Being indexed and snippet-eligible is the entry condition, and extractable, passage-level answers are what get quoted. Citations increasingly reach beyond the top ten results, which is an opening for well-structured pages on smaller sites.

For a business, the two practical questions are whether Overviews appear for the queries your buyers make, and whether you are among the cited sources when they do. A cited page can gain qualified clicks even as overall click-through on the query falls; an uncited page simply loses. Search Console now reports generative-AI impressions, which makes this measurable.
